Working Remotely Is Explicitly Permitted
- Unlike most countries on this site, New Zealand doesn't leave this in a gray area. As of January 27, 2025, Immigration New Zealand's visa conditions explicitly allow visitor visa and NZeTA holders to work remotely for an overseas employer or client while in the country.
- What's still off-limits: working for a New Zealand-based employer, providing services to New Zealand individuals or businesses, or any work that requires your physical presence at a New Zealand workplace.
Tax Residency
- You're a New Zealand tax resident if you're physically present more than 183 days in any 12-month period, regardless of what visa or permit you're on, including a visitor visa or NZeTA.
- Days count in fractions (arrival and departure days both count as full days), and once you hit the 183-day mark, residency is backdated to the first of those days.
The Gotcha
New Zealand is a rare case where the legal question is already answered clearly: since January 2025, remote work for a foreign employer is explicitly written into visitor visa and NZeTA conditions, not just quietly tolerated. That's genuinely different from the gray-area situation in most other countries on this site, but the separate 183-day tax residency clock still runs the same regardless of your visa conditions, so a long remote-work stay can still trigger New Zealand tax residency on its own timeline.
