License Requirements
- As a visitor, you can drive on your valid U.S. license, no International Driving Permit needed, since it's already in English.
- You must carry your physical license while driving; a photo of it on your phone doesn't count.
- You can only drive the categories of vehicle you're licensed for back home.
Time Limit Is Changing
- Currently, you can drive on your U.S. license for up to 18 months from your last entry into New Zealand.
- From November 1, 2026, this drops to 12 months from your last entry, a real, upcoming reduction, not a rumor.
Road Basics for Americans
- New Zealand drives on the left side of the road, the opposite of the U.S., with the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle. Roundabouts flow clockwise, and it's worth consciously looking right first when crossing a street on foot, since that instinct doesn't come naturally.
- Speed limits and distances are posted in kilometers (km/h), not miles. A 100 km/h limit is about 62 mph; a 50 km/h limit, common in towns, is about 31 mph.
The Gotcha
New Zealand's generous 18-month allowance for a foreign license is about to get shorter: from November 1, 2026, it drops to 12 months. If you're planning an extended stay that straddles that date, don't assume the older, longer window still applies, check NZTA's site for the current rule before you rely on a specific number of months.
