Schengen short stay (visa-free)
As a U.S. citizen, you can enter the Netherlands without a visa for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, the same Schengen-wide rule as Spain, France, Italy, and Germany.
DAFT (Dutch-American Friendship Treaty) self-employed permit
A genuinely U.S.-specific route: under a 1956 treaty, U.S. citizens can get a residence permit to work self-employed in the Netherlands by registering a business with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) and investing at least €4,500 in it. The first permit is issued for 2 years, then can be extended for 5 more as long as the business equity never drops below €4,500.

Overstay Consequences

  • Overstaying follows the general Schengen pattern: fines, a possible entry ban, and automatic tracking via the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES).
  • An entry ban can apply Schengen-wide, not just for the Netherlands.

Renewal Path

The Gotcha

DAFT is one of the more unusual visa pathways on this site because it's specifically written into a 1956 treaty for U.S. citizens; most other nationalities don't have an equivalent shortcut to Dutch self-employed residency. But it's not passive: you have to actually register and fund a real business within 6 months of approval, and keep at least €4,500 in it, or the IND can pull the permit.
