Working on a Tourist Stay

  • Visa-free and visa-on-arrival entries into Indonesia are for tourism only; they don't authorize any kind of work, including remote work for a foreign employer while physically present in Indonesia.
  • Indonesia introduced an actual legal path for this in April 2024: the E33G Remote Worker (digital nomad) visa. It requires proof of employment or contracts with clients/companies located outside Indonesia, minimum annual income of $60,000, and at least $2,000 in savings, and it explicitly prohibits earning income from, or providing services to, any Indonesian entity.
  • The E33G is a real visa you apply for in advance, not an interpretation of what a tourist entry quietly allows, so working remotely on an ordinary visa-free or VoA tourist entry stays technically unauthorized.

The Second Home Visa Alternative

  • Introduced in December 2022, Indonesia's Second Home Visa is a longer-term option (up to 5 years, extendable) aimed at high-net-worth individuals, requiring a bank deposit of at least $130,000, or alternatively owning property in Indonesia worth at least $1,000,000.
  • Like the E33G, the Second Home Visa does not permit working for or earning income from an Indonesian entity; it's a residency route, not a work-authorization route.

Tax Residency

  • Under Indonesia's Income Tax Law, you become an Indonesian tax resident if you're present in Indonesia for more than 183 days within any 12-month period, or if you reside in Indonesia with the intention to stay.
  • Once you're a tax resident, Indonesia taxes your worldwide income, not just Indonesia-sourced income.

The Gotcha

Both of Indonesia's actual remote-work visa routes (E33G and the Second Home Visa) specifically bar you from earning money from Indonesian clients or employers, they're built for people whose income stays entirely foreign-sourced. If any part of your work shifts toward Indonesian clients while you're on one of these visas, you'd fall outside what the visa actually authorizes.
